Howard Mann established his legal and consulting practice in 1993, specializing in international sustainable development law. His practice includes a particular focus on international trade, investment and environmental law. Howard Mann offers his clients seasoned counsel that bridges legal and policy issues through the development of practical, legally informed and strategically sound advice.

Dr. Mann has worked on a wide range of environment and development concerns, involving virtually all major international environmental and trade agreements. He has been involved in international litigation processes, the implementation of existing agreements and development of new ones, institutional development and planning, international training seminars for business and government leaders, and the development of new approaches to environmentally sustainable development.

Before joining the private sector, Howard Mann was Legal Counsel with the Government of Canada for five years. He represented Canada in many bilateral and multilateral environmental negotiations, such as the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and the NAFTA-related North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation. He also assisted in preparing several key environmental law cases and in drafting Canadian environmental legislation.

Howard Mann received his Bachelor of Civil Law at McGill University in MontrJal, Canada, and his Master of Laws and Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, London, UK. He is currently a member of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group of Experts on international investment law advising Canada’s Minister of International Trade. He is also the Senior International Law Advisor for the International Institute for Sustainable Development, and holds an appointment as adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. He is a member of the Canadian Council on International Law.
